Visit the archaeological area of the Roman Theatre of Benevento with Campania>Artecard.
Built between the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, the Roman Theatre of Benevento is located in the western part of the ancient city. It exemplifies the typical model of an Imperial Roman theatre.
The theatre features a semi-circular cavea with a diameter of 98 meters and an orchestra of 30 meters. The cavea, accessible via corridors and staircases, originally had three architectural orders: Tuscanic, Ionic, and Corinthian. Today, only the lower order remains, consisting of 25 arches on piers with Tuscan half-columns. Notable elements include: the scaenae frons, the elaborately decorated stage backdrop, which housed the scenography and one of the two aulae (side rooms of the stage), which still preserves its polychrome marble cladding.
