Reggia di Caserta

Visit the Royal Palace of Caserta with Campania>Artecard, one of the most majestic royal residences in the world, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 along with the Carolino Aqueduct and the Belvedere of San Leucio. Designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, the complex includes the Royal Palace, the Royal Park, the English Garden, the San Silvestro Woods, and the Carolino Aqueduct. With its 1,742 windows, 123 hectares of Royal Park, 3 km of Waterway, and over 200 botanical species in the English Garden, the Royal Palace of Caserta remains a driving force of cultural development and a symbol of beauty on a global scale.

The vision of Charles of Bourbon profoundly transformed the region, culminating in the creation of the Royal Palace of Caserta. The construction of the Royal Palace began on January 20, 1752, and after the death of Luigi Vanvitelli, the work was completed by his son, Carlo Vanvitelli.

A visit to the Royal Park is not to be missed. Like the palace itself, the park owes its conception to the genius of Luigi Vanvitelli and his son Carlo, designed at the request of King Charles of Bourbon and his young successor, Ferdinand IV. The project masterfully blends elements of the Italian Renaissance with French influences, inspired by the works of André Le Nôtre at Versailles.

The central axis, represented by the Waterway (Via d'Acqua), creates a perspective effect that visually connects the Royal Palace of Caserta with Naples through what is now Viale Carlo III. Water, a key element in Vanvitelli’s design, is transported to the Royal Park through 38 kilometers of canals in the Carolino Aqueduct. The landscape system is completed by the 76 hectares of the San Silvestro Woods and the 23 hectares of the English Garden, which together form a harmonious and evocative ensemble.

Since 2020, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the 1980 earthquake that struck Irpinia, the Terrae Motus contemporary art collection has been displayed in the Royal Apartments with a new exhibition setup. This collection, consisting of over 70 contemporary artworks, was initiated by Neapolitan gallerist Lucio Amelio, who, after the November 23, 1980 earthquake, engaged artists such as Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Paladino, and Jannis Kounellis to reflect on the seismic destruction and the role of art in reconstruction.

The collection has been exhibited in various international exhibitions before being donated to the Royal Palace of Caserta in 1993.
