Pio Monte della Misericordia

Pio Monte della Misericordia

Visit the Pio Monte della Misericordia with Campania>Artecard in the historic centre of Naples. The 17th century church exhibits one of the three masterpieces in Naples by Michelangelo Merisi, known as Il Caravaggio: The Seven Acts of Mercy.

The Pio Monte della Misericordia is a charitable institution founded in 1602 by seven Neapolitan nobles with the aim of helping the needy through acts of mercy.

Housed in a monumental building along the Decumanus Major in Naples, it is one of the oldest secular institutions in the city. The 17th-century church inside the building has on its high altar The Seven Acts of Mercy , a masterpiece by Caravaggio. The work is a realistic depiction of the charitable activities of the Order, inspired by the seven corporal works of mercy, which marked the beginning of naturalism in 17th century Naples and influenced painters of the time.

Particular attention is paid to paintings from the 16th to the 19th centuries, with around 120 works by artists such as Luca Giordano, Mattia Preti and Francesco De Mura on display in the Quadreria, and a further 60 works in the contemporary section, testifying to the continuing commitment of the Pio Monte to the promotion of art and culture, in line with its mission to combine beauty and solidarity.
