Visit the Archaeological Park of Paestum with Campania>Artecard, one of the world's most valuable archaeological sites. It is home to Doric temples built by the Greeks between the 6th and 5th centuries BC, which, alongside those of Agrigento and Athens, are among the best-preserved.
Since 1998, Paestum has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The temples were built shortly after the founding of the city, originally called Poseidonia, around 600 BC by Sybarite colonists. Located in the central part of the city, the temples are surrounded by a well-preserved defensive wall. Near the temples was the market, or central square, along with residential districts, the ruins of which date back to the Roman Imperial era. Over time, the city experienced various dominations, passing from the Greeks to the Lucanians in the second half of the 5th century BC, and later to the Romans in 273 BC, who transformed it into a Latin colony.
Located in the heart of ancient Poseidonia-Paestum, the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum has housed one of Italy's most important archaeological collections since 1952. Among the artifacts recovered in over a century of excavations, highlights include:
The exceptional series of metopes from the 6th century BC, which once adorned the Temple of the Hera Sanctuary on the Sele River.
The famous "Tomb of the Diver", dating back to the 5th century BC.
The only known painted slabs from Lucanian tombs, dating between the 5th and 4th centuries BC.
Since October 2023, the museum features a completely renovated and expanded exhibition, enriched with educational materials and multimedia content, designed to ensure maximum accessibility and provide diverse visitor experiences for all audiences.
