mini circuit
Visit the Archaeological Park of Cumae with Campania>Artecard, the first Greek colony in the West. Not to be missed the Antro della Sibilla Cumana, the place where the Sibyl received her worshippers and preached to them about the future.
Transformed into a castrum (fortified fortress) during the Late Empire, the acropolis of Cumae was at the center of the wars between the Goths and Byzantines in the 6th century AD. Later, in 915 AD, it was conquered and devastated by the Saracens, who turned it into a haven for pirates. Finally, in 1207, it was finally destroyed by the Neapolitan army led by Goffredo di Montefusco.
Ancient Cumae, the first Greek colony in the West founded by the Euboic-Calcidans in the 8th century B.C., preserves the acropolis and the lower town visitable today. A visit to the Antro della Sibilla, the place where the Sibyl received her worshippers and preached to them about the future, is very impressive; the Roman Crypta, built to connect the city of Cumae to the harbor area and later used as catacombs in the early Christian period; the Capytolium, a temple consecrated to Jupiter Neptune and Mercury (the Capitoline triad); and the Forum Baths, built in the city center, with marble slabs, mosaics and painted plaster. Excavations have revealed a long occupation of the site from Archaic to late ancient times, with artifacts on display in the Campi Flegrei Museum in Baia.
This site is part of a mini-circuit that includes the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, the Archaeological Park of the Baths of Baia, the Flavian Amphitheater, and the Archaeological Park of Cumae. Using one available admission included in the pass, it is possible to visit within two consecutive days all the sites in the mini circuit.
