Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa

Visit the Pietrarsa Museum with Campania>Artecard and take a fascinating journey through time among the locomotives and trains that have united Italy from 1839 to the present day, spanning 184 years of Italian railway history.

The buildings housing the museum were once the pavilions of the Royal Mechanical, Pyrotechnic, and Locomotive Factory, founded by Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1840 to free the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from English and French technical supremacy.

The workshops were built along the first Italian railway line, the Naples-Portici line, inaugurated on October 3, 1839. Pietrarsa represents Italy's first industrial hub, predating the founding of Breda by 44 years and Fiat by 57 years. The site remained active until the 1970s when the rise of electric and diesel locomotives marked the decline of steam engines and the factory. In 1977, the workshops were converted into a railway museum, inaugurated in 1989 after renovation works.

Thanks to restorations between 2014 and 2017, the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa has become the prestigious and fascinating site we know today. The 19th-century pavilions were restored, the outdoor spaces enhanced with the Mediterranean Garden, and a new glass parapet was installed on the seafront terrace, offering a unique view of the Gulf of Naples. Modern technology also plays a significant role in the museum's new life: the cinema hall features state-of-the-art audio and video systems, and the conference hall has been made more comfortable and functional.
