The Duca di Martina Museum is named after Placido de Sangro, duke of Martina, a passionate collector of decorative arts who lived in the 19th century. The collection, initially private, was donated to the Italian state in 1911 and was placed in the Villa Floridiana, built in the early 19th century at the behest of Ferdinand I of Bourbon, as a gift to his wife, the Duchess of Floridia.

The Duca di Martina Ceramics Museum is renowned for its extensive collection of ceramics, one of the richest and most comprehensive in Europe. The collection includes more than 6,000 pieces, including Italian majolica, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, European enamel and glassware, and ivory works. Pieces from the most celebrated manufactures such as Meissen, Sèvres, Capodimonte, and Doccia are on display, as well as some of the finest Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Qing periods, and cloisonné enamels, prized for their refinement and complexity.
