Opened in 1888 through the initiative of Prince Gaetano Filangieri Prince of Satriano, a Neapolitan nobleman with a passion for art and culture, son of General Carlo and grandson of the philosopher of the same name and author of The Science of Legislation. The prince wanted to create a museum that would be not only a collection of works of art, but also a center of culture and education for the city of Naples. The museum's home is the Palazzo Como, a 15th-century Renaissance building located on Via Duomo in the heart of Naples' historic center.
The Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum boasts an eclectic and valuable collection that reflects the tastes and interests of its founder. Among the exhibits are paintings, sculptures, antique weapons, porcelain, rare books and decorative art objects. Each piece in the collection tells a unique story and contributes to a complete cultural experience.
The museum also includes a valuable library that holds manuscripts, incunabula and rare books, some dating back to the 15th century. Correspondence between Gaetano Filangieri and Benjamin Franklin can also be found here. This collection is a real treasure for scholars and lovers of history and literature.
