Visit the ARCOS Museum with Campania>Artecard, which houses both the Egyptian Section of the Museo del Sannio, featuring artifacts from the Beneventan Temple dedicated to the goddess Isis, known as the "Lady of Benevento," and the Contemporary Art Section.
ARCOS – Egyptian Section
The exhibition takes visitors on an ideal journey through the temple, arranged in a sequence of rooms. It begins with an "initiation" into the cult of the goddess, continues through the area in front of the temple, and finally leads to the sacred space housing the goddess’s cella. The Temple of Isis was built by Emperor Domitian between 88 and 89 AD, using materials sourced directly from Egypt. This unique characteristic has made Benevento the Western city with the highest concentration of original Egyptian artifacts, primarily statues. In fact, Benevento was home to one of the most important temples of Isis in the Roman Empire.
ARCOS – Contemporary Art Section
ARCOS, Benevento's Contemporary Art Museum, is housed in the underground level of the 19th-century Palazzo della Prefettura, following an extensive restoration and recovery project. Opened on June 25, 2005, the museum has since become a cultural hub for modern and contemporary art, fostering an open approach to artistic innovation. In a city rich in historical and archaeological landmarks, ARCOS has successfully blended tradition with artistic experimentation.
The museum curates thematic exhibitions featuring internationally renowned artists as well as emerging talents, encouraging them to engage with Benevento’s history and urban fabric. The result is a series of site-specific installations, often extending beyond the museum walls, creating a dynamic dialogue between contemporary art, the city, and its ancient monuments.
