mini circuit
Visit the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula, the largest monastic complex in Southern Italy and one of the most important architectural and artistic sites in Europe. It was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
Built in 1306 at the behest of Tommaso Sanseverino, the Certosa di San Lorenzo in Padula underwent numerous expansions and renovations until the 19th century. After being abandoned by the Carthusian monks in 1807 during French rule, it was declared a national monument in 1882 and later restored.
Today, in addition to its historical and artistic significance, the Charterhouse hosts a contemporary art collection, a result of the international exhibition "Le Opere e i Giorni", held between 2002 and 2004. It has been recognized as one of the "Luoghi del Contemporaneo" (Sites of Contemporary Art) by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Among its most remarkable spaces are:
The Great Cloister, covering nearly 15,000 square meters, making it one of the largest in Europe.
The Library, featuring a majolica-tiled floor and ornate ceiling decorations. It once housed tens of thousands of books, illuminated manuscripts, and codices, though only about 2,000 volumes remain today.
The Church and its magnificent Choir, showcasing extraordinary artistic and architectural beauty.
This site is part of a mini circuit that includes the Certosa di San Lorenzo, the Joe Petrosino House Museum, the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, and the Multimedia Civic Museum of Padula. By using just one entry included in the pass, visitors can explore all the sites in the mini circuit within two consecutive days.
