Castel Sant’Elmo e Museo del Novecento

Visit with Campania>Artecard Castel Sant'Elmo, one of Naples' most iconic monuments, an imposing fortress overlooking the city from the Vomero hill. With its unique star shape and breathtaking panoramic view of the Bay of Naples, the castle is one of the city's most visited and popular tourist attractions.

Originally known as "Belforte," Castel Sant'Elmo was built in 1329 under Robert of Anjou's reign. The fortress, designed by the Sienese architect Tino di Camaino, served primarily as a defensive structure and later as a prison during the Bourbon era. It underwent a complete reconstruction in the 16th century under Spanish viceroyalty, assuming its current six-point star layout.

Inside, the castle houses the "Piazza d’Armi," an open space offering a stunning 360-degree view of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. It also features the Museo del Novecento, showcasing modern and contemporary art, with a focus on 20th-century Neapolitan and Italian artists.
