Battistero di San Giovanni in Fonte

Visit the Early Christian Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte in Padula with Campania>Artecard, one of the oldest baptisteries in the Western world.

The Early Christian Baptistery is one of the oldest in the Western world. It was built at the request of Pope Marcellus I, from whom the church and the village of Marcellianum take their name. The site was destroyed in the 6th century, possibly during the Gothic War. In the 12th century, the church was rebuilt and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.

The restoration work carried out between 1985 and 1987 uncovered a structure centered around a square-shaped building, along with walls featuring full arch openings, which likely once supported a dome.

This site is part of a mini circuit that includes the Certosa di San Lorenzo, the Joe Petrosino House Museum, the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, and the Multimedia Civic Museum of Padula. By using just one entry included in the pass, visitors can explore all the sites in the mini circuit within two consecutive days.
