mini circuit
Visit the Flavian Amphitheater in Pozzuoli with Campania>Artecard built in the first century AD,one of the largest and most impressive amphitheaters in ancient Rome. With about 40,000 seats it is second in capacity only to the Colosseum and the Amphitheater Campano in Santa Maria Capua a Vetere.
Strategically located at the intersection of the Via Domitiana and the road to Naples, this monument was erected to replace an earlier building that had become insufficient due to Puteoli's rapid population growth.
The amphitheater is distinguished by its structure divided into three tiers of tiers, corresponding to the ima, media and summa cavea, following traditional architectural canons. The complex was surrounded by an elliptical portico, paved with travertine slabs, and accessible by stone pillars adorned with half-columns, later reinforced with brick pillars. Twenty-two flights of stairs provided access to the upper tiers, while internal corridors ensured an orderly flow of spectators to the cavea through the vomitoria, the entrances located along the tiers.
The basement of the amphitheater, served by similar corridors, was accessible via two monumental symmetrical entrances and contained the stage pit, located in the center of the arena. This architectural complex, once the hub of Puteoli's social and cultural life, is now a must-see for those wishing to discover the history and architecture of ancient Rome.
This site is part of a mini-circuit that includes the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, the Archaeological Park of the Baths of Baia, the Flavian Amphitheater, and the Archaeological Park of Cumae. Using one available admission included in the pass, it is possible to visit within two consecutive days all the sites in the mini circuit.
