Anfiteatro Campano

Visit Anfiteatro Campano with Campania>Artecard, the largest Roman-era amphitheater after the Colosseum.

Built during the Flavian era, between the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, the Campanian Amphitheater was restored and adorned with columns and statues by Emperor Hadrian and inaugurated by Antoninus Pius, as confirmed by an inscription discovered in 1726. This imposing structure, capable of hosting up to 60,000 spectators, replaced the ancient arena dating back to 130-90 BC, which is also famous for Spartacus' revolt in 73 BC.

Adjacent to the Amphitheater is the Gladiator Museum, celebrating the prestigious gladiatorial school established by Julius Caesar in 49 BC in Capua.

The first hall of the museum is dedicated to gladiatorial games, featuring explanatory panels, replicas of armor found in Pompeii, a model depicting the Amphitheater in both its original form and its current ruins, and a video illustrating its history and architecture. The second hall showcases surviving busts of the deities from the portico and a reconstruction of a section of the cavea, displaying its magnificent marble decorations.
