Villa Campolieto

Visit one of the Vesuvian Villas along the Miglio d’Oro with Campania>Artecard, a historic route lined with magnificent residences built by renowned architects such as Luigi Vanvitelli, Ferdinando Fuga, Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, and Ferdinando San Felice.

These villas, adorned with vast gardens and exquisite frescoes, showcase the grandeur of 18th-century Neapolitan aristocracy and the artistic mastery of some of the greatest painters of the time.

Located in one of the most picturesque and privileged settings along the Bourbon Strada delle Calabrie, Villa Campolieto stands near the Royal Palace of Portici and adjacent to Villa Favorita.

Commissioned by Prince Luzio De Sangro, Duke of Casacalenda, in 1755, the villa’s design and construction were initially entrusted to Mario Gioffredo.

The villa follows a square-plan layout, with four sections arranged around a Greek-cross central gallery and extending over five levels. Behind the grand staircase, visitors can admire the backdrop designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, featuring water displays that once delighted noble guests descending the staircase toward the exedra courtyard. Vanvitelli, modifying Gioffredo’s original design, completely reimagined the grand staircase, incorporating a central ramp with two side ramps, inspired by the Royal Palace of Caserta, a grotesque mask and decorative arch at the entrance, six niches, originally housing mythological statues, punctuating the ascent to the main floor and a vestibule covered by a domed atrium, flanked by two apse-shaped niches.

Stepping out onto the terrace, visitors are rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples, stretching from Posillipo to Ischia, and extending to Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula.

Today, Villa Campolieto serves as an important international center for art and cul
