Visit Rione Terra with Campania>Artecard — the oldest, most fascinating, and mysterious district of Pozzuoli, still largely undiscovered and rich with hidden beauty and ancient legends.
This breathtaking village, perched high above the sea, is the cradle of the ancient Roman colony of Puteoli, which for centuries served as a vital port of the Roman Empire and a crossroads of civilizations and cultures. Here, past and present blend and coexist in perfect harmony. At the heart of Rione Terra, nestled among houses and alleyways, stands the magnificent and captivating Temple-Cathedral — a unique site in the world. Thanks to a remarkable restoration project, visitors can now admire both the archaeological remains of the Temple of Augustus and the Christian structure of the 17th-century Cathedral at the same time. The innovative restoration approach, known as the "Eulogy of the Palimpsest", is itself a contemporary artwork, highlighting the layers of history that have shaped the monument over the centuries.
The Cathedral of San Procolo is not just a snapshot of a single artistic era, but rather a cinematic journey through the succession of cultures, epochs, and voices in ongoing dialogue. Inside, it houses an impressive art gallery featuring works by Giovanni Lanfranco, Massimo Stanzione, Cesare and Francesco Fracanzano, Agostino Beltrano, and Paolo Domenico Finoglio. Alongside these masterpieces by male artists, there are also three extraordinary paintings by a remarkable woman and artist: Artemisia Gentileschi.
