Visit the Archaeological Museum of Antica Capua with Campania>Artecard, created to enhance and showcase the artifacts discovered during excavations conducted since the 1980s in the Capua area.
The Archaeological Museum of Antica Capua is housed in a 19th-century historic building that incorporates the Sant’Erasmo Tower. It features an extensive collection of archaeological artifacts and was inaugurated in 1995. The museum includes exhibition halls, restoration laboratories, a playroom, and conference spaces. The central courtyard, covering 2,800 square meters, serves as an open-air museum, showcasing stone fragments and a marine mosaic.
The museum was created to enhance and display the artifacts discovered during excavations in the Capua area since the 1980s. In 2022, a new museum itinerary, "Signs of the Landscape: The Appian Way and Capua," was inaugurated, presenting previously unseen works that had been preserved for decades. This collection includes statues, frescoes, and inscriptions related to the Appian Way and Roman Capua.
Near the museum lies the Mithraeum, a sanctuary dedicated to the cult of Mithras, distinguished by a fresco depicting Mithras slaying the bull, along with decorations referencing the seven planets and the religious ceremonies of the cult. The Mithraeum also preserves initiation scenes and a marble relief depicting Amor and Psyche, a symbolic theme often found in funerary representations.
