Visit the Church of Santa Luciella with Campania>artecard , a small church in the heart of Naples' ancient center, located in the alley once called "vicus Cornelianus" in ancient Roman times (now Vico Santa Luciella), connecting San Biagio dei Librai to San Gregorio Armeno. The church was founded shortly before 1327 by Bartolomeo di Capua, a jurist and political advisor to Charles II of Anjou and Robert I, who also commissioned important Gothic portals for San Lorenzo Maggiore and San Domenico Maggiore. He also founded the Church of San Maria di Montevergine in 1314.
In Baratta’s 1629 depiction, Santa Luciella is identified as the Chapel of the Arte dei Molinari or Mulinari (millers or workers at a mill); it was later taken over by the pipernieri, ancient artisans who carved hard stones. These artisans, accustomed to working with chisels and hammers, feared that splinters from the stone might damage their eyes, and thus began to venerate Saint Lucy, the protector of sight, dedicating this place to her. In the 18th century, the church underwent significant renovations and, in 1748, became the seat of the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception, Saints Joachim and Charles Borromeo. After being abandoned for over 30 years, Santa Luciella was reopened thanks to the tenacity and work of the Respiriamo Arte Association on April 5, 2019.
